Western Union Collage

Western Union Collage, originally uploaded by girlcancreate.

I am getting ready for Nathalie Roze's Mini Crafternoon Tea and i have been making collages. Lots and lots of collages. It's really fun.

This one is called Western Union and it utilizes a lot of the ephemera that i found at Gadabout, which is a BRILLIANT shop in Leslieville. If you haven't been there yet, you should make the trip to the east end. It is soooo worth it. Full of well priced vintage clothes, books, ephemera, bowties, jewellry, diaries, tchotchkas and brilliance, i suggest that you take a few hours to go through this store. So yummy!

Dave- O

Lovely man!, originally uploaded by girlcancreate.

4 years ago today, i married this beautiful and wonderful man named Dave. (My nickname for him is Dave-O)

We were very fortunate to have a stunning day albeit a bit hot on Toronto Island. Surrounded by close friends and family everything went the way i had hoped for..well, minus the wine being spilt down the front of my dress, but EVERYTHING else was beautiful.

When we married we vowed to share art, our hearts and our lives together. Although some times have been tough we have found magic together in our lives.

I always look back to my vows to find this passage from Walt Whitman.

I give you my hand!
I give you my love, more precious than money,
I give you myself, before preaching or law;
Will you give me yourself? Will you come travel with me?
Shall we stick by each other as long as we live?
(Walt Whitman)

I hope so!

My dear Dave, thank you for 4 years of love and life together, may we be together for ever.

Making and More..

My Table at Craft Dinner, originally uploaded by girlcancreate.

Last weekend I was at Craft Dinner show at the Imperial Pub near Dundas and Yonge. Unfortunately the show was poorly attended due to the fact that many many other events were happening that day, and that the space wasn't totally suited for a craft show.

I was lucky and had a pretty good day selling some of my contemporary meditation beaded pieces that i call "Vida Beads" I hope that soon, i will start to post these on my etsy site.

Here is my table at the show, and i joke that you can call me Spaz Can Create because i just do so much. A lot of people wonder about that, but it really all feels related. It's about using things that many might throw away or never see and creating them into neat, cool little bits of art.

What are your thoughts on doing many art/crafts? Are you of the world that we should just focus on one, or do many? I would love to know your thoughts!

Questions for Me!

When i read Jamie Ridlers Blog and found this, i couldn't help myself! I love answering questions. My answers sometimes surprise me and i always feel like i learn a bit more about myself.  So, if you are interested in have some questions created just for you, let me know and i will send them your way as soon as possible!

" The sassy and spectacular Michelle Ward of When I Grow Up Coach met up with White Hot Truth Soothsayer Danielle LaPorte and created this kick-butt interview meme. Michelle designed special questions just for me and I'll answer them at the end. I'll play along too and if you decide you'd like me to create 5 interview questions just for you, I would love to."

THE INTERVIEW RULES

* leave me a comment with your email address saying: “interview me”
* I will e-mail you five questions of my choice
* you can then answer the questions on your blog {with a link back to my blog}
* you should also post these rules, along with an offer to interview anyone else who emails you, wanting to be interviewed
* anyone who asks to be interviewed should be sent 5 questions to answer on their blog
* it would be nice if the questions were individualized for each blogger

Lisa's Questions!

1. What were the early signs you were a creative spirit?

I think one of the first signs was my voracious reading from a very young age.  I would read anything that i could get my hands on and make it some sort of drama.  I remember in grade 4 taking Betty and Veronica comics and making little plays out of them to perform for my class.  What fun it was!  I also remember getting magazines, cutting out the images i liked and putting them up on my wall.  Both of these practices have sustained them selves to now.  I am a storyteller, dancer and puppeteer who also does some mixed media work!

2. What's your absolute favourite piece of clothing?

Undoubtedly, my wedding dress.  I never thought that i would ever get married, let alone in a traditional wedding.  But after meeting Dave, i came home and wrote in my journal that i just met the man that i was going to marry.  2 years and 5 days latter, we had a beautiful small wedding on Toronto Island, and then a week later a big party at Lula Lounge!  I swore to myself that if i were to ever get married i would splurge on a Lowon Pope gown.  And i did.  A beautiful 1920's style silk dress with a vintage chantilly lace cover and a glam shouder wrap made me feel like a queen!  I have worn it a number of times in performances and on anniversaries!  It's beautiful!

If you were were magically given the ability to speak another language, what would you want it to be and why?

I would love to learn sign language.  When i was a teenager, i babysat a boy who was hearing impaired.  We spent a lot of time talking, but it wasn't easy.  I wish that i had known some sign language so that i could truly communicate with him to share his view of life.  It's a language that is beautiful and silent and would enable me to communicate with a lot of people who's stories are not heard.

What's the question you're longing to be asked?

So, Lisa, we have been thinking that you would be a great host for this new TV talk/story show, would you consider such a thing?

Who would you most like to learn from?

Meredith Monk is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is stunning, honest and complex.  I would love to spend some time with her to learn more about how she tells a story, and how she creates a full body experience for both the audience and the performer.  Stunning really.  I enjoy this quote from her.
"I work in between the cracks, where the voice starts dancing, where the body starts singing, where theater becomes cinema."

The Next Chapter - Week #1- Wreck this Journal

A few months ago, i ended up participating in  Jamie Ridler's The Next Chapter Book Blogging Group and really enjoyed myself.  Last Friday she started a new group based on the Wreck This Journal.

Now i must admit that i have seen this book many times and that i have always for one reason or the other put it down.  Sometimes i thought that it was just too silly, or gimmicky, but a few weeks ago i picked up How to be An Explorer in the World also by Keri Smith and I loved it. Now, i am hoping to set aside all of my snarky comments and just engage in the fun. Cause isn't that what life really is.

Plus, in the light of my dad being sick, i think that this might be just what i need to reduce some stress of sickness in the family.

So today I have decided that i am going to join the group and be a part of an amazing group of creative souls!

We shall see what happens.  I know that it will for sure be fun and i always love reading others updates!

In the meantime, flowers are blooming and my poppies are lovely!
